Calligraphy Class

Thursday 1:30 pm Beginners, 2:30 pm Experienced in DCH

Calligraphy is taught at Silver Lakes in 9 sessions this year at two levels as explained in detail below.
Day: Thursday
Dates: Starting January 30 - Ending March 26 (9 classes)
  • Calligraphy I (Beginners) at 1:30 - 3:00 pm
    • Students should sign up for class.
    • Because of the nature of the course, we can only take about 15 people in the beginner class.
    • Please email Christopher at
    • He will enroll you and respond confirming your place in class.
    • See details below.
  • Calligraphy II at 2:30 - 4:00 pm
    • This class is for those who took Calligraphy I last year and feel they are ready for some advanced alphabets and some design work.
Where: Diamond Clubhouse
Instructor: Christopher George
Calligraphy I
Calligraphy I is intended for beginners and will cover the 5 essential lettershapes and the
spacing and arrangement of elementary calligraphic elements. We’ll also cover numerals
and special shapes that occur (ampersands et c.)
  • You will be given a booklet on your first day that will, essentially, be the course we will cover. (Because of photocopying costs, I’ll have to, sadly, charge $5 for this)
  • Prior to the first class, you will need to get a calligraphic pen and set of nibs.
    • Last year the pen of choice (that was available) was the Manuscript set: which included a pen and 4 nibs.
    • The nib we will use in class is the nib that is just under 1/8” in width. (Mine is marked 3B)
    • There are other, more extensive, Manuscript sets; they too are fine.
    • Felt pens, even with chiseled nibs, won’t do!
  • Since you’ll have a fountain pen, you will need ink.
    • Parker’s Super Quink is one brand; there are many others. If in doubt check with me.
  • You will also need a pad of 5-squares-to-the-inch graph paper. This is important!
    • (4 squares to the inch won’t work for reasons that will be explained!)
  • That’s it!
If you do have interest, please sign up as instructed above.
We had a lot of fun last year; I’m sure it will be the same this year!
Calligraphy II
  • This class is for those who took Calligraphy I last year and feel they are ready for some advanced alphabets and some design work.
  • I intend to cover alphabets that include, Gothic Blackletter (caps and lower case), Uncial, half-uncial, Humanist Bookhand and perhaps others.
  • We can look at how to create a decorative cap and, if time, how to illuminate it.
  • With only 9 classes, we’re going to be busy!
This schedule gives our instructor a busy half-hour from 2-2:30 with both Calligraphy I and II folks so be kind!
